"Nucleus Research reported that in 2006, 70-75 percent of email will be spam, viruses and other unwanted content. Spam will cost companies nearly $2,000 per employee a year in lost productivity."

You are calling the shots...

"
Spam is a problem that is not going away" says René Sloos, president of CompuConsult Inc." The Internet has opened doors of opportunity for businesses around the globe − increasing commerce and trade, creating new markets, and allowing immediate access to volumes of data and information.

Unfortunately, the Internet has also opened doors to some very dangerous email-borne threats. With about 564 million email users worldwide, electronic messaging today, is a breeding ground for computer viruses, unsolicited commercial or junk email (spam), and inappropriate content.

These unwanted emails cause frustration and aggravation, but more importantly, have the power to jeopardize network security, employee productivity, and corporate integrity.

"Fighting spam requires constant email threat monitoring and protection. Decisions on an executive level are required to implement sufficient solutions, says René Sloos." As new anti-spam techniques are developed to control the latest spam threats, spammers make every effort to stay one step ahead – developing newer and even more malicious spam tactics.

It is critical that organizations understand the latest spammer tactics and spam-fighting techniques in order to combat spammers’ relentless efforts. Only by remaining aware of and implementing the latest spam protection methods can an organization mitigate the costs and risk associated with spam.

With unsolicited email costing businesses millions in wasted employee resources and productivity, and acting as the carrier for a host of potential security woes, spam and blended email threats are among the biggest problems facing enterprises today.

Not only have spam and viruses taken their toll on business networks, but fraud and phishing scams, designed to hijack financial and personal consumer information from the Internet, have become so prevalent and damaging that government regulations now require financial and healthcare industries to integrate high levels of online security to protect transactions and keep confidential information secure.

The pressure is on you...
The growing concern to keep business email safe is putting extreme pressure on business leaders to seek out and implement email defense solutions that are effective and economical.

There are hundreds of anti-spam and anti-virus companies in the market selling products and services designed to defend against unwanted email−solutions in the form of software, appliances and managed services.

René Sloos: "While there are some who still express concerns around the security and confidentiality of email traffic being filtered by a managed service provider, more and more organizations are turning to IT-professionals for guidance." In fact, all types of enterprises use managed services to filter email, from the Fortune 500 to small, five to ten person companies.

You can't afford NOT to protect your network ...
Ads for Viagra, Paris Hilton videos, attachments with racial or sexual overtones. Viruses with names like Sober or Netsky. The deluge of spam and viruses is only expected to increase, so it's extremely important for every business to protect its email network. Really, it's only just begun...

More Secure
Why it is important to have a difficult password?

People hate to remember difficult passwords. If passwords are too difficult to remember we usually find 'post-it’s' taped to the monitor or under keyboards or desk pads. Great security...

Hackers (those guys trying to dig into your personal stuff) only need a username and password. Did you know that in most cases the username matches the first part of an email address?

If your password is an existing word that occurs in a dictionary, hackers apply programs that will keep trying to find your username - password combination, until a successful match is found. Pretty scary huh?!

A difficult password is at least six characters long and contains characters from three of the following four categories:

  • English uppercase characters (A-Z)
  • English lowercase characters (a-z)
  • Digits (0-9)
  • Non alphanumeric characters (i.e.: !, $, #,
    or %)

Alternatives to difficult passwords are devices like 'fingerprint scanners' or 'proximity cards'. These cards can lock your computer when you walk away from your desk and unlock it when you return.

The most affordable solution is to apply difficult passwords! Choose a difficult password you can remember. Some tricks are to use @ instead of the letter ‘a’ or number zero for letter ‘o’.

TIP: Never share your password with a co-worker! Your system administrator can grant your co-worker the appropriate access to the resources without your password.

More Efficient
Find yourself performing the same sequence of tasks over and over again? Stop, back away from the computer and think …

Computers are supposed to
make your work and life easier, right? But do they?
Well, start with using your computer to do all those repetitive tasks, so you don’t have to!

The magic word is “macros”. A macro is a pre-recorded sequence of commands that can be invoked with a single click. Imagine the time you would save to enjoy an extra cup of coffee!

Although macros are little
“programs”, you do not have to
be a programmer to create them!

Most programs like Microsoft Word, Excel and Access allow you to “record” a macro similar to recording a TV program. You just have to start the Macro Recorder, carry out the steps you would like to automate and than stop the recorder.

You will save lots of time the next occasion you need these steps to be carried out.

Need to automate lots and lots? CompuConsult can help you to reach a higher level of macro functionality and productivity.

More Profitable
Can't keep up with storage space demands? No matter how much drive space you add to your network system... it seems like it's never enough, huh?

“The bigger the basement the more junk” is often the case. The problem is not the storage space but the amount of stuff users want to keep. Most people are pack rats by nature and need to be taught a practical storage strategy.

We see clients walking in the door with high resolution digital cameras and camcorders and dump all that digital content on to their servers. They don’t ask themselves “what is the cost of storing all this information?” To most of them, storage is free and without any restrictions.

So, what is the real cost of data storage? We need to ask ourselves a couple of questions:

  • Do I really need to store this data on the network?
  • What is the life span of this data?
  • Who is responsible for deleting/archiving this data after the life span?

Some data can just stay on local computers and some can also be “burned” to CD’s, DVD’s or written to an archive tape.

Even when you think that the amount of data you produce is rather small, it does affect your company's operations. Preserving disk space needs everyone's full attention. It saves your company money and reduces the amount of data that needs to be backed up every night.

Need help with your data-management?

Introducing the

Email Defense

“Keeping inboxes free of spam is a 365/24/7 - job ”

There are several options for keeping your email network free of spam and viruses. Some businesses turn to desktop solutions or “appliances” – boxes that sit alongside your servers – to filter out email threats. However, in most cases, these solutions sit inside of your firewall, which allows spam messages entry into your network. Appliances also require integration and on-going maintenance from IT staff, whose time is probably better spent on serving the primary needs of the business.

An increasing number of businesses are choosing to block spam and viruses through an on-line “managed service.” Most major services are able to block upwards of 98% of all incoming spam, and usually have an anti-virus component that can complement a desktop solution.

The primary benefits of managed anti-spam and virus services are that they work at the network perimeter – filtering out email threats before they reach your network – and require minimal integration and administration.

CompuConsult recommends MX Logic® email defense. (www.mxlogic.com) With an open structure for third party anti-virus services, MX Logic® also includes protection from a proprietary “worm detection” technology that can block new worm and virus threats, long before the anti-virus companies issue updates.

Don't wait until disaster strikes. Underestimating this problem will leave you with significant damage to your network. With the current 2006 spam projections, you just can't afford NOT to protect your network. CompuConsult has extensive knowledge on how to implement this AFFORDABLE EMAIL DEFENSE SOLUTION, in order to help you reduce the dangers and costs associated with spam.
